Early Reading

This area of our website will give useful information about what your child does in school to learn to read. It will also include some tips on what you can do at home.

"Studies show that reading for pleasure makes a big difference to children’s educational performance as a child’s reading skills are important to their success in school; their literacy level impacts on their success in all other subject areas."

Phonics

At Leominster, we use Read Write Inc to teach our children phonics. Here are two useful handbooks to explain more:

Phonics Screening Check - Year 1

In Year 1, your child will have a Phonics Screening Check to test their understanding of the phonics they have learnt. Please have a look through the presentation below to see what this means for your child.

Our Reading Rainbow!

To promote reading further, children have the opportunity to win a brand new book from Mrs Eckley-Gardner. All they have to do to win is follow these steps:

- Read 12 times to move up the rainbow to the next colour (all classes have a rainbow reading display).

- Once children have reached the end of the rainbow (8 steps to reach), they can go and choose their very own bookmark! If they 'go over the rainbow' again then they get to choose their very own book to keep!

IT IS THAT SIMPLE, SO LET'S GET READING!
