UNDERSTANDING SEN

The term “Special Educational Needs and Disability” refers to a child or young individual who encounters learning challenges that require specialised educational support. Children and young individuals are identified as having SEN if they experience 'significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age, or has a disability that makes it difficult for them to access the educational provision (including early years education) provided for other children of the same age which necessitate extra support' (SEND Code of practice, 2015)

SUPPORT for SEN PUPILS at LEOMINSTER PRIMARY SCHOOL

Every child, including those with additional learning needs, has the right to access a rich and balanced curriculum. At Leominster Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that children with additional needs and disabilities flourish across all aspects of school life, including emotional well-being, social interaction, and mental health support.

Our school recognises that many pupils require additional or alternative provisions to achieve their full potential academically. These support measures may be needed temporarily or over extended periods. Some children benefit from targeted help within the classroom environment, provided by fully qualified teachers, teaching assistants, or external professionals.

Leominster Primary School is proud to have a dedicated team of passionate and skilled staff members who work tirelessly to support SEN pupils overcoming any barriers to their success. We rely on the expertise of our specialised SEND Coordinators (SENDCos), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Mentor, and our qualified Speech and Language Department to provide personalised assistance tailored to each child’s needs.

Children with Special Educational Needs in the mainstream classes also benefit from extra support from our school’s ASD Lead Mentor. The ASD lead mentor visits mainstream classes, observes children with SEN, and identify specific learning challenges, and develops and provides additional assistance and strategies tailored to each child’s needs. Our ASD Lead mentor helps the child cope and participate effectively in the mainstream classroom. This collaborative approach helps integrate SEN pupils more smoothly and boosts their progress within the regular classroom setting.

On this page you will find some additional support for children with Special Educational Needs. We want to ensure that the children are supported as best as possible during this tricky time.

The Social, Emotional and Mental Health tab may also be useful for children who are finding the lockdown difficult and are anxious.
